Progress in cold atom Hubbard quantum simulation: Temperature frontiers 147

Quantum simulation using ultracold fermions in optical lattices has offered valuable insights into the Hubbard model, a fundamental paradigm of strongly-correlated systems. The frontier challenge is to approach and explore the uncharted regimes of the doped Hubbard model inaccessible to exact classical simulations. In this talk, I will discuss how we apply programmable control to bring large-scale quantum simulation of the Hubbard model into a new regime. On triangular lattices with geometric frustration, we observe a transition from a 120-degree antiferromagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state as particle dopants are increased. We reveal the nature of this transition being the formation of ferromagnetic polarons from single particle dopants, which directly demonstrates magnetism enhanced by kinetic motion as famously predicted by Nagaoka. On square lattices, by implementing new schemes for adiabatic state preparation and entropy redistribution, we demonstrate a several-fold temperature reduction approaching the ground state. Our work highlights the unique opportunity for quantum simulation to explore low-temperature phases in regimes where unbiased numerical simulations are challenging and elucidate complex quantum many-body problems.
