Zoom: https://tennessee.zoom.us/j/86292515289 Abstract: The parton approach was introduced decades ago as a theoretical framework for describing exotic magnetic states of matter, most notably quantum spin liquids. Beyond its conceptual role in characterizing novel phases, this approach has proven increasingly powerful for making quantitative connections to experimental probes, particularly neutron scattering, in realistic quantum materials. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress along these lines through several representative examples. I will show that parton-based descriptions are not only effective for quantum magnets near a quantum melting point into a spin-liquid phase, but also provide a unified framework for understanding magnetic excitations and phase transitions between disordered paramagnetic states and antiferromagnetic order in dimerized quantum magnets.
