3 AI as a Research Assistant for Quantum Materials and Information

The rapid progress of artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to address long-standing theoretical and experimental challenges in condensed matter physics. In this talk, I will present an AI-driven framework in which machine learning is integrated into the scientific workflow, from hypothesis formulation to theoretical modeling and experimental interpretation.

I will first show how large language models (LLMs) can act as structured theoretical assistants rather than simple text generators. I will introduce a multi-step agentic pipeline that autonomously derives mean-field Hamiltonians for interacting quantum many-body systems, along with CMT-Benchmark, an expert-curated benchmark for evaluating reasoning reliability in AI-assisted condensed matter research.

I will then discuss discovery-oriented applications at the intersection of quantum materials and quantum information. I will demonstrate how unsupervised analysis of 4D-STEM data uncovers hidden charge-density-wave phases in 1T-TaS2, and how machine learning can identify topological phases in disordered Majorana nanowires, aiding the search for robust platforms for topological quantum computation.
