Quantum spin liquids in atomically thin materials 1h 310 (IAMM)

“Quantum spin liquids” are magnetic systems that fail to order due to geometry or interaction-driven frustration. Techniques from the atomically thin materials field may offer a route toward realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid in particular, in its native 2D environment. a-RuCl3, known to exhibit the required Kitaev magnetic couplings, can be exofliated to single- or few-layer samples to be measured on their own, in combination with a variety of other 2D materials, or re-stacked with itself to create moire patterns, potentially providing routes to tune the magnetic couplings toward the KQSL. But measuring these samples is another matter: most probes of bulk 3D materials do not readily carry over to ~10-um-sized, nanometer-thick samples. In our efforts to make relevant measurements, we have found interesting charge doping phenomena when a-RuCl3 is combined with other materials, are working on thermal transport probes for suspended 2D membranes, and developing `quantum sensing' approaches based on defects in hexagonal boron nitride to pursue signatures of quantum spin liquid phenomena.
