The development of advanced numerical algorithms has been instrumental in deepening our understanding of strongly correlated electron systems and topological phases of matter. In this talk, I will present recent progress enabled by such algorithmic innovations, focusing on two paradigmatic models: the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model and the Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field. In the first part of the talk, I will discuss the interplay between spin and charge orders and their connection to the ground-state stripe phase in the doped Hubbard model. By introducing a new advance in the constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method to effectively control the fermionic sign problem, we identify a finite-temperature phase transition below which charge ordering emerges. I will also explore the implications of these findings for the nature of the transition. In the second half of my talk, I will present how non-magnetic vacancies can bind and stabilize non-Abelian anyons in the Kitaev model under a finite magnetic field, modeled via a Zeeman term. This analysis is based on large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. The identification and manipulation of non-Abelian anyons in quantum spin liquids is a key step toward realizing fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. To quantify the extremely small binding energy of an anyon excitation at a vacancy, we introduce a refined definition of this binding energy and develop an extrapolation scheme that enables its accurate extraction using solely ground-state properties obtained from DMRG.
