Seminar: Superconductivity and Pair Density Wave states in Topological bands of Two-dimensional crystals 310

A critical feature of a superconductor is its ability to screen magnetic fields, the so-called Meissner effect. The superfluid weight measures this effect, which in conventional superconductors is inversely proportional to the electron’s effective mass. In flat-band superconductors, this conventional superfluid weight vanishes. However, quantum band geometry rescues superconductivity in flat bands. First, I will describe this geometric superfluid weight in singular flat-band superconductors and show that the singular behavior of the quantum geometry increases free vortex formation and enhances superconducting critical temperatures. Then, by analyzing the superfluid weight in topological flat bands, I will describe a band geometry mechanism to stabilize an exotic pair density-wave superconducting state. If time permits, I will end with a discussion of the phenomenology of the chiral pair-density wave state, which was recently detected in the quarter-metal phase of rhombohedral-stacked tetra- and penta-layer graphene.
